How Does it Work?
The Erbike
(short for Ergonomic Bicycle) improves on the comfort, practicality and bio-mechanical
efficiency of the bicycle.
The ErBike, like all bicycles used pedal propulsion but it also combines suppplementary power and a rider-positioning system, into an ingeniously simple design. This system delivers the high-speed efficiency and
long-distance comfort typical of a recumbent, but with excellent climbing ability that, for most riders, exceeds that of an upright racing bicycle.
The ErBike's innovative features offer riders a
greater level of engagement with their machine, giving a more stimulating ride,
compared with normal bicycles. In other words, riding the ErBike is fun.
The current prototype demonstates the operating
principles of the Erbike design:
An
upper-body propulsion system that can be usedf to assist pedalling and greatly
improves rider comfort and performance at higher levels of effort, such as
climbing and short sprints. This utilises an oscillating handelbar system, two
freewheels and a lightweight chain and cable system. Steering is unaffected by
this system.
An
adjustable seat position that can easily be set while riding to select one of
three positions for flatter gradients and urban riding, for high speeds and for
hill climbing.
Despite the
incredible functionality of the ErBike, the mechanical systems are light weight
and simple to use. This is acheived in part by utilising the upper body
propulsion system as a key element of ride position selection.
